Swimming Pool Filters

At First Look Service LLC we specialize in installing, replacing and updating swimming pool filters and filtration systems.

Pool filters play a crucial role in maintaining clean, clear, and safe water in your pool. They help remove dirt, debris, bacteria, and other contaminants. There are three main types of pool filters: sand filters, cartridge filters, and DE (diatomaceous earth) filters. Each type has its own unique features and benefits. Let’s break them down:

What Pool Filters Do:

  • Trapping Debris: Pool filters help catch dirt, leaves, bugs,      hair, and other debris that fall into the pool, keeping the water clean      and free of visible particles.
  • Preventing Algae and Bacteria Growth: By filtering out tiny particles,      they help prevent algae and bacteria growth, which can thrive in dirty      water.
  • Improving Water Clarity: Filters enhance water clarity by      removing fine particles that would otherwise make the water look cloudy.
  • Maintaining Sanitizer Efficiency: Clean water helps chemicals like      chlorine work more effectively, ensuring the pool remains sanitized and      safe.

Each type of filter has its own strengths, so the choice depends on your pool’s size, the amount of debris, and how much maintenance you’re willing to do. Do you already have a pool, or are you considering installing one? If you would like to schedule a consultation please contact our office and we will schedule a free consultation with one of our Certified Pool Technicians. First Look Service tech will look into details of your pool structure and needs and will come up with the best filtration solution for your needs.specific requirements.

Sand Filters

  • How They Work: Sand filters use a bed of specially graded sand      to trap dirt and debris. Water from the pool is pumped through the sand,      and contaminants are caught in the sand grains. The water then returns to      the pool.
  • Pros:
    • Simple and low-maintenance.
    • Affordable.
    • Can last several years if maintained properly.
  • Cons:
    • Less effective at filtering fine particles (like       algae and small debris) compared to DE or cartridge filters.
    • Require periodic backwashing to clean the sand       and maintain flow.

Cartridge Filters

  • How They Work: These filters use replaceable fabric cartridges      to capture dirt, debris, and other contaminants. The water flows through      the cartridge, and the contaminants are caught in the fibers.
  • Pros:
    • More efficient than sand filters at capturing       fine particles.
    • Easier to maintain than sand filters (no       backwashing required).
    • Typically have a smaller footprint, making them ideal       for tight spaces.
  • Cons:
    • Cartridges need to be cleaned or replaced every       few years (depending on usage).
    • Higher initial cost compared to sand filters.

Diatomaceous Earth (DE) Filters

  • How They Work: DE filters use a fine powder made from      fossilized diatoms (tiny aquatic organisms). The DE powder is applied to a      grid inside the filter, which traps very fine particles from the pool      water. The water passes through the DE-coated grids, which act like a very      fine mesh.
  • Pros:
    • Best at filtering out the smallest particles,       including bacteria and algae.
    • Provides the clearest water compared to other       filters.
  • Cons:
    • Most expensive type of pool filter.
    • Requires more maintenance and backwashing       compared to other types.
    • The DE powder needs to be replenished       periodically after backwashing.
